What Is CVD? Reading Aggressive Buying and Selling in Crypto
Author: Crypffalo Research · 22:42 23/10/2026
CVD (Cumulative Volume Delta) sums the difference between aggressive buy and sell volume. How it is calculated, 4 price-CVD scenarios, divergence, absorption, spot vs futures CVD, and using CVD to confirm entries.

CVD (Cumulative Volume Delta) is the running total of aggressive buy volume minus aggressive sell volume. It shows which side is willing to pay up to trade now rather than wait.
Price shows the result; CVD shows the force behind it. This guide explains reading CVD alongside price and using it to confirm entries.
Quick summary
- Delta: aggressive buy volume minus aggressive sell volume in one candle.
- CVD: delta summed over many candles; a rising line means buyers are more aggressive.
- Divergence: price making a new high without CVD following signals weakening buying.
- Spot vs futures: strong spot buying is usually real demand; futures alone is usually leverage.
- Use it to confirm: CVD supports decisions at support and resistance; do not use it alone.
Aggressive vs passive orders
- Passive (maker): limit orders resting in the order book.
- Aggressive (taker): market orders that fill immediately. Aggressive buying lifts the ask; aggressive selling hits the bid.
- Why it matters: price only moves when aggressive orders consume all resting orders at a level.
How delta and CVD are calculated
- Candle delta = Aggressive buy volume − Aggressive sell volume.
- CVD = Sum of deltas from the start of the window you are viewing.
- Example: candle 1 buys 6M, sells 4M → delta +2M. Candle 2 buys 3M, sells 5M → delta −2M. CVD after 2 candles is 0.
The absolute CVD value matters less than its direction and how it moves versus price.
4 price-CVD scenarios

| Price | CVD | Common reading |
|---|---|---|
| Up | Up | Aggressive buyers drive price; the rally has force |
| Up | Down or flat | Sellers hitting into the rally; watch for a false high |
| Down | Up | Buyers absorbing selling; a bounce may come |
| Down | Down | Aggressive sellers dominate; do not catch the bottom yet |
Divergence and absorption
- Bearish divergence: price makes a higher high, CVD a lower high. The rally is driven by less buying.
- Bullish divergence: price makes a lower low, CVD a higher low. Selling is drying up.
- Absorption: CVD drops hard while price holds a zone. Large resting orders are soaking up sells. Compare with price zones and walls on DeepDom.
Divergence is not an immediate entry. Wait for a candle close that breaks structure.
Spot CVD vs futures CVD
- Spot buying, futures flat: usually real demand; rallies last longer.
- Futures buying, spot flat: usually leverage pushing price; funding rises and reversals come easily.
- Both together: agreement makes the signal more reliable.
DeepDom shows CVD per exchange (Binance, Bybit, OKX, Coinbase, Hyperliquid) and a "Spot vs Futures" panel. The Money flow page also charts CVD per coin.

Using CVD to confirm an entry
- Step 1: mark support on the chart.
- Step 2: when price reaches it, check CVD: still falling hard, flattening, or showing absorption?
- Step 3: wait for a candle to close back up off the zone with CVD turning up, ideally with spot buying too.
- Step 4: place the stop below the zone and size with the position size calculator.
On breakouts, rising CVD with strong volume helps separate real breaks from traps.
Limits of CVD
- Each exchange has its own CVD; one exchange can miss flow elsewhere.
- Large orders may be split or filled off-exchange, so CVD does not see everything.
- Very small timeframes are noisy; 15-minute to 4-hour charts are easier for swings.
Crypffalo Trade Copilot reads footprint and money flow across 3 exchanges when scoring each LONG setup, then messages you when to enter, take profit and exit.
FAQ
How is CVD different from regular volume?
Volume only shows total traded size. CVD separates which side was aggressive, buy or sell, so it shows the direction of force.
Does negative CVD mean price will fall?
Not always. Negative CVD while price holds a zone often signals absorption. Read CVD with price and support.
Should I watch spot or futures CVD?
Both. Spot reflects real buying and selling, futures reflects leveraged positioning; when they agree, the signal is more reliable.
