What Is Zcash (ZEC)? Private Transactions, Supply and NU7
Author: Crypffalo Research · 22:45 23/10/2026
Zcash (ZEC) supports private transactions with zk-SNARKs. Transparent vs shielded addresses, the 21M supply and halvings, the NU7 upgrade, October 2026 market data and the risks of trading ZEC.

Zcash (ZEC) lets users send money publicly like Bitcoin or privately, hiding sender, receiver and amount. Zcash launched in 2016 and has a 21 million ZEC maximum supply, like Bitcoin.
On 23 October 2026, ZEC traded around $1,228, down about 24% over a month. Market cap was about $20.8 billion and futures open interest about $2.37 billion.
Quick summary
- What it is: a blockchain allowing transparent or shielded transactions using zk-SNARK proofs.
- Supply: 21M ZEC maximum, about 16.96M circulating.
- Halving: the latest in November 2024 cut the block reward to 1.5625 ZEC.
- Next: the NU7 upgrade, expected around 5 November 2026, cuts block time from 75 to 25 seconds.
- Risks: high volatility, large futures leverage and privacy-coin rules that vary by region.
What is Zcash?
Zcash is a proof-of-work blockchain like Bitcoin with an added option for private transactions. It was started by Electric Coin Company alongside the Zcash Foundation.
In 2026 Electric Coin Company wound down and its team moved to the Zcash Open Development Lab. The Zcash Foundation and Shielded Labs continue independently.

Transparent vs shielded addresses
- Transparent (t-address): like Bitcoin. Anyone can see sender, receiver and amount.
- Shielded: uses zk-SNARKs, a mathematical proof that a transaction is valid without revealing what is inside.
- Your choice: users decide which transactions are public or private, and can share a viewing key for audit or tax when needed.
The Zashi wallet (now presented as Zodl) shields by default, integrates the Keystone hardware wallet and swaps through NEAR Intents.

Supply and halvings

- Max supply: 21M ZEC.
- Circulating: about 16.96M ZEC (early October 2026).
- Halving 1: November 2020, block reward to 3.125 ZEC.
- Halving 2: November 2024 with NU6, block reward to 1.5625 ZEC.
- NU6: sends 12% of block rewards to a lockbox until the community decides how to use it.
Recent upgrades
- NU6.2 (3 June 2026): an emergency upgrade fixing a flaw in the Orchard circuit and restoring Orchard with a corrected verifying key.
- NU7 (expected around 5 November 2026): cuts block time from 75 to 25 seconds without changing daily ZEC issuance. Activation height not yet set.
- Zcash Shielded Assets (ZIP 227): a framework for issuing shielded assets such as stablecoins on Zcash, still in development.

How to watch ZEC before trading
- Order book and order flow: ZEC has full order book, price zone, wall and per-exchange CVD layers on DeepDom.
- Funding: persistently high positive funding means crowded longs. Check Funding rate.
- Position size: ZEC is volatile, so stops sit further away and size must be smaller. Use the position size calculator.
Risks of trading ZEC
- Volatility and leverage: price falling together with open interest usually signals deleveraging.
- Network upgrades: NU7 is not a guaranteed catalyst; the 2026 Orchard flaw shows technical risk remains.
- Regulation: privacy coins may be restricted on some exchanges or in some regions.
- Organizational change: the team transition and designs like Crosslink (hybrid PoW/PoS) are still unproven.

FAQ
How is Zcash different from Monero?
Zcash lets you choose public or private transactions, while Monero hides every transaction by default. Zcash uses zk-SNARKs; Monero uses ring signatures and stealth addresses.
Does NU7 increase ZEC supply?
No. NU7 shortens block time but keeps daily ZEC issuance the same.
Should I use high leverage on ZEC?
ZEC is volatile and open interest is large, so high leverage is easily liquidated. Set stops from the chart and size at 1–2% of capital.
