Bitcoin halving explained

The block reward halving event

Quick definition: Halving is the event in which the reward for Bitcoin miners is cut in half, occurring roughly every 4 years.

Halving slows the rate at which new BTC is issued. The most recent one was in April 2024, when the reward dropped from 6.25 to 3.125 BTC per block.

Historically, Bitcoin's major bull runs have tended to occur 12–18 months after a halving, but there is no guarantee this will repeat.

Bitcoin's maximum total supply is 21 million BTC, and halving is the mechanism that helps enforce that cap.

💡 Example

Before the 2024 halving, about 900 new BTC were mined each day; after the halving, about 450 BTC.
