US spot bitcoin ETFs drew $526.7 million in net inflows on Monday, Oct 19, according to Farside data. It was a notable turnaround after a week dominated by redemptions.

BlackRock's IBIT did almost all the lifting with $665.2 million. On the same day, BlackRock filed with the SEC for a new bitcoin ETF aimed at investors who want some protection when prices fall.

Key takeaways

Bitcoin ETF flows flip back to positive

Spot bitcoin ETFs swung between inflows and outflows all last week. On Oct 14, the day hotter-than-expected US CPI data landed, the funds shed $261.4 million.

Daily net flows ($ million, per Farside):

Monday's session effectively erased the previous week's outflows. Across the last six sessions, the group has taken in a net $298 million or so.

The inflow was highly concentrated. Apart from IBIT, FBTC and GBTC, every other fund, including those from Bitwise, Ark and VanEck, reported zero flows.

Ether ETFs kept bleeding. BlackRock's ETHA alone lost $95.4 million, and Crypto Briefing reports that month-to-date ether ETF outflows have topped $950 million.

BlackRock wants to sell bitcoin with a cushion

The new fund is called the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protect ETF. According to the filing as reported by The Block and crypto.news, it seeks upside exposure to IBIT up to a limit, paired with a degree of downside protection.

The fund will not hold bitcoin directly. Instead it will use options on IBIT alongside cash and short-term fixed income, selling higher-strike calls to offset costs, which caps the upside.

Key details reported so far:

Bloomberg Intelligence analyst James Seyffart said this is BlackRock's third bitcoin ETF filing, after IBIT and the premium income fund launched in June. The firm's crypto lineup still covers only bitcoin and ether. IBIT itself manages more than $65 billion.

What it means for crypto markets

The strong inflow has not pushed prices far: bitcoin tagged about $83,000 on Oct 19 before slipping back toward $82,000. Markets remain weighed down by high oil prices, hot US inflation and jitters around AI stocks.

Longer term, buffered products could open the door to more cautious buyers such as pension funds and financial advisers. For now, though, the fund is only a filing and cannot trade yet.

No. BlackRock filed on Oct 19, and the registration could take effect roughly 75 days later if the SEC raises no further issues.

Why are ether ETFs losing money while bitcoin ETFs gain?

Institutions appear to be favoring bitcoin during the current volatility. Ether ETFs have seen four straight days of outflows and more than $950 million leave so far in October.
